Spring action airsoft guns are very durable and have an extremely low failure rates. These models of airsoft pistols are manually operated, so they must be cocked prior to each shot so aren’t useful for airsoft gun battles. Electric Airsoft Pistols

The electric airsoft gun uses the same compressed air that propels the BB out of the bore is reused to cycle the slide back (aka-blowback) creating a realistic "recoil" by cycling the slide/upper receiver back-and-forth while firing the gun. It was developed in Japan and it is the most frequently used type of airsoft guns. A rechargeable battery is usually used to power an electric motor within the internal assembly that shoots the pellets. There are many different kinds of electric powered airsoft guns, but they all have a series of three gears that are mounted within a gearbox that the motor powers. This is the most popular airsoft pistol for games and competition. Electric airsoft pistols have a Rate of Fire (ROF) of 300 to 900 rounds per minute (RPM), and their muzzle velocities range from 200 to 400 feet per second. They do not require any external connections and are completely self-contained. The electric airsoft pistol is popular among the "simulationist".

Gas Airsoft Pistols

Gas airsoft pistols use pressurized gas to propel pellets; this type of airsoft pistol is usually the most proficient of the three types. HFC-134a and Green Gas, which is a blend of polysiloxane lubricant and propane, are the two most commonly used gas. The less common gases are nitrogen, C02, and red gas. Gas works well with pistols. Since all models are manufactured to a high degree of surface detail and dimension, these are for the serious collector.

Airsoft pistols are replicated after real guns and will even have the gun manufacturer emblem on the airsoft pistol. Some of the types of guns are chosen because of a movie that may have included the gun in a well-known scene like the following examples:

For lovers of the old west, there are airsoft pistols that are replicas of revolvers. They have the spinning barrel that the pellets are loaded into.
