When airguns are mentioned, the majority of people picture the current day airsoft guns, which are fairly new to history. The first airguns can be traced as far back as 125 AD (and probably were around much earlier), when air was used in “guns” to propel an object. At that time it was air from the lungs that was used and the guns were commonly known as blowguns. The “guns” were often simple tubes made from hollowed out stalks.
From these simple beginnings, different types of airsoft pistols have emerged that replicate real guns. Airsoft gun sales, including the sale of airsoft pistols, have increased as some countries restrict gun ownership and use by civilians and people turn to airsoft guns, which continue to be legal.
It isn’t clear exactly who was the first to come up with the idea of using bellows instead of lungs to propel and object out of the barrel of the gun. Here is a timeline for the history of airguns that led to airsoft pistols.
Airguns become the most accurate of the large-bore rifles. Airguns were very uncommon and not well known. Due to the special skills, knowledge, and the amount of time that were needed to make the complex valves, locks and air reservoirs of the early airguns the price was unaffordable to the average person, only the wealthy were able to afford airguns at that time.
The most powerful and accurate were the pump action airguns. Usually the air reservoir was outside the gun, though some also had the reservoir on the inside.
The appeal of the airgun was that it could be fired many times per minute unlike the front-feeding powder burners that were common at the time. Airguns didn’t obscure the target with a cloud of smoke and a flash from the powder either. Airguns (pistols and riffles) were known for dependability.
1803-06 Captain Meriwether Lewis carried an air rifle on the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. The gun served his needs for hunting and also was used to astonish the Indians.
Gallery guns become popular after the Civil War and in America, the spring piston gun is powerful and successful. When the firearm cartridge and smokeless powder were available, airguns lost their appeal and were no longer considered weapons or arms.
Europe continued to develop airguns like air pistols. They were designed for youth and mass-produced with low power.
When England restricts gun ownership and use by its citizens in 1920, airsoft guns rise in popularity.
1970’s brought adult powered airguns and new pellet design. Airsoft rifles and airsoft pistols become popular in the US.
In early 1980, Japan restricts gun ownership and use by civilians and airsoft rifles and airsoft pistols gain in popularity and the market jumps.
There are three types of airsoft pistols to choose from once you decide to purchase an airsoft pistol. There are spring action airsoft pistols, electric airsoft pistols, and gas airsoft pistols. Airsoft pistols are available in a revolver style guns.
